Vienna State Opera. The Corsair by Adolphe Adam. March 20, 2016. Premiere of the ballet choreographed by Manuel Legris

A premiere of Manuel Legris’ production of The Corsair was yesterday evening. It’s original version was presented in Paris in 1856. Everyone has come to get in touch with the world of beauty. This full-length ballet drama created for the Vienna Society is the first choreographed production by the great dancer and reputed ballet-master of the Vienna State Ballet.

Liudmila Konovalova, who danced Gulnare, did her part with such joy, that it seemed she danced the principal female role. Unlike Maria Yakovleva, Liudmila Konovalova demonstrated spirit and obvious presence on stage. And it has nothing to do with choreography, but rather the ballerina’s personality. In the next performances she will make the Medora’s role the principal one. Regrettably, Maria Yakovleva demonstrated inaccuracy, like in her previous performances. Muscle tension was not enough and her dance lacked precision. She failed to create an impression that she really put her heart into her dance.
